With a population of 214 million people, Brazil is the seventh largest country in the world. Recent surveys indicate that the Holy Spirit is moving in the country as more than 25% of Brazilians identify as Evangelical Christians.

This was confirmed by a study conducted by the University of São Paulo’s Centre for Metropolis Studies (CEM), Evangelical Focus reports.

CEM stated that in 1990 there were just 7,033 Evangelical Churches in Brazil, but that number had increased to 109,566 by 2019. This represents a 543% increase over that 29-year period. It also means that nearly 10 new Evangelical churches were opening each day during this period.

The fastest-growing Christian group in Brazil is Pentecostals and charismatics. They account for well over half the churches (56%) with 48,711 claiming to be Pentecostal and an additional 12,825 classifying themselves as charismatic.

That number is probably higher as 25,554 churches were unclassified, and undoubtedly a significant percentage would have Pentecostal or Charismatic leanings.

Approximately 22,400 churches fall into the traditional (non-Charismatic) Evangelical category such as Baptist or Methodist.

This dramatic increase in churches has also coincided with more Brazilians identifying as Evangelical.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics reported that in 1990, 9% of Brazilians identified as Evangelical, but that had more than doubled by 2010, with 22.2% stating they were Evangelical Christians.

More recent surveys indicate that the number of Evangelical Christians is continuing its rapid growth.

A 2020 Datafolha survey found that 31% of Brazilians were now calling themselves Evangelical.

With the dramatic increase in number of churches and the Evangelical Christian population more than tripling in just three decades, it appears that the Holy Spirit is on the move in Brazil.
