Based on consumer satisfaction surveys, the popular In-N-Out Burgers has been a favorite fast food restaurant for Americans for decades.
It has been owned and operated by an Evangelical Christian family for the past several decades.
It was started in 1948 in California by Harry and Esther Snyder. Over the years, the privately-owned chain has slowly expanded from California. It now has 380 restaurants in Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Texas.
It has not followed the franchise model used by other fast food restaurants, choosing instead to operate its own restaurants to maintain quality control.
This has been successful as it received a rave review from renowned chef, Gordon Ramsay. In an interview with Scotland’s Daily Record, Ramsay said, “In-N-Out burgers were extraordinary. I was so bad, I sat in the restaurant, had my double cheeseburger then minutes later I drove back round and got the same thing again to take away.”
In addition to producing good food, it is also considered one of the best places to work in America. In Glassdoor’s annual listing of the best places to work in America, In-N-Out was number 6 in 2024.
The company has been owned by Snyder family since its inception. The company is currently majority owned and operated by Snyder’s granddaughter, Lynsi Snyder, who is a devout and outspoken Christian.
In an interview with podcaster Allie Beth Stuckey, Snyder announced that her family (husband and four children) are leaving California and moving the company’s headquarters to Tennessee, CBN reports.
Though this is part of their bigger plan to expand the restaurant chain into that state, Snyder added there were other reasons behind their decision to move.
“I really loved living in Northern California,” Snyder said. “And there are a lot of great things about California, but raising a family is not easy her, doing business is not easy here.”
In 2024, In-N-Out closed its only restaurant in Oakland, California over safety concerns for customers and employees. Up to this point, this was the only store that In-N-Out had closed in its 77 year history.
Snyder added in the interview that additional California restaurants may be on the chopping block as well.
In the 1990s, In-N-Out started printing Bible verses on its food packaging and later its cups.
“It was my Uncle Rich who put the Bible verses on the cups and wrappers in the early ’90s, just before he passed away,” Snyder explained in the interview. “He had just accepted the Lord and wanted to put that little touch of his faith on our brand. It’s a family business and will always be, and that’s a family touch.“
This includes well known verses like John 3:16, Proverbs 3:5 and Revelation 3:20.
But as well it also cited less recognizable passages such as:
- Nahum 1:7: “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” and
- Luke 6:35: “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.“
Snyder’s decision to move In-N-Out’s head office out of California follows similar decisions made by other corporations including Charles Schwab, Chevron and Ellon Musk’s Space X.
Many cited high taxes, safety concerns, business regulations and quality of life as the reasons for their move.
