Do you want a religious argument? I personally hate them, but we have an argument among Christians, in modern times, that is hardly mentioned. The opinions are out there, but the conversation is quiet.

What is your horoscope sign? Is Astrology a good thing? Can we talk about this?

When I was a boy, I lived in the time of large newspapers. Every family that I knew had the paper delivered to their front door, and everyone in the family wanted to see a section. I always wanted the comics, and my brothers and sisters did too, so we had to learn how to cooperate and get along in a stressful situation. Possibly that was a good life lesson, and we learned adult lessons about civil behavior.

The comics were funny and interesting, but the one section we were never permitted to look at, was the horoscope. To this day, I can’t remember what my sign is, although I have looked it up. If we ever read our horoscope, at least one of my sisters or brothers would catch us, and then report us to our parents. I recommend not travelling down that road, at least if your parents are like mine.

Christians don’t like horoscopes, and I suspect that Jewish people don’t like them either, or at least they keep it on the downlow. I believe most religions don’t like Astrology and Horoscopes.

My question is; If we could remove the old fashioned restrictions, is Astrology good or bad? I know that many people out there would like an answer to that question. Some of these restrictions should be re-visited.

If you want one opinion, here is someone’s video:

So, now what do you think? Let’s re-visit this one.

If you do an Internet search, you will find many opinions about religions and Astrology. I wont give you a hundred or more links here, but you could try that.

I am writing as a Christian, and I have one question: Who are you? And that includes me. We should know who we are, and what road we have decided to travel on.

Here’s another question: How did you get to where you are? Did your family tradition or peer pressure force you to be who you are? The best answer is, at some point you made the important decisions, driven by your own thoughts and convictions. When we make ourselves who we are, we can step beyond restrictions and scolding from other people. I recommend that. We can consider other opinions, but we should make the final decisions about who we are, and what we believe.

I won’t back down on that. What I just described was the battle of my life. I was raised in a family with strong religious ideas, and when I was young, I didn’t have a chance to choose; I could only conform. Now, I hope that this adult person is the product of my own decisions. If I’m just repeating and broadcasting my conformity, you should not read this. You need to find your way in life.

Someone named Jesus gave us this direction: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)  That is clear.

Now horoscopes. I went to a site called horoscope.com and I got advice for early January:

Some problems with the structure of your house may need attention, Capricorn. Perhaps the plumbing or electrical wiring isn’t operating at maximum efficiency. It probably isn’t a good idea to try to fix this yourself, but you might not be able to reach a professional today. You will want to get this done soon. Don’t be tempted to forget about it.

That was interesting, but not true for me. My questions were like; What supernatural power knows about the wiring and plumbing in my house? Where does that power come from? Who knows things about me that I don’t already know?

Even if the directions are correct, what spooky force has such great insight and can give directions like that?

For me, the supernatural power, the spirit that I get direction from is God. That is a decision that I have made, and that God, in the Bible, gave these instructions:

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. (Deuteronomy 18: 10 and 11)

That is clear. The ancient Middle East was filled with practices like Astrology and Horoscopes, and most people got their directions for life from those sources. This was an important part of those cultures. And yes, they believed so deeply that they commonly sacrificed at least one child in the family. The details were gruesome, and I don’t want to describe them here, but people believed sincerely, and gave their religious devotion to the spiritual forces that gave them advice and direction.

At the heart or root of our lives, it is impossible to travel on two different roads. The original Christians made a radical decision to travel on one spiritual road, and to leave the others.

It is easy to miss that, in our modern busyness.
