Throughout the Bible, we read verses where God promises to restore the Jews to the promised land and to restore the nation of Israel. It was one of the key markers indicating that the world was entering the end times.
The prophet Ezekiel said, “I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land.” Then Ezekiel adds that God “will make them one nation in the land” (Ezekiel 37:21-22).
This promise to restore the nation of Israel was fulfilled in 1948 when the UN set up the nation of Israel.
In response to this, the government of Israel prepared for the return of Jews from around the world by passing Aliyah, the Law of Return.
In an article for Christian Learning, The Israel Insider tells us more about this process and Israel’s Law of Return:
“In the 1880’s, groups of Jews began to make their way to Israel to help settle the land and build communities. But it wasn’t until 1950 that the term “Aliyah” begun to be used. In that same year, the State Of Israel passed a law called the Law of Return. This law allowed for Jews from all over the diaspora (places of their exile) to finally come home to a nation of their own. Israel opened her doors to her people scattered for centuries making something Jewish families only ever dreamed of a reality.”
“The nation was only two years old at the time, having become a State in May of 1948. It was a fragile time in history with WWll only having been over for 3 years. The world still reeling from the devastating effects of Hitler’s regime. Despite the Jewish people suffering an unfathomable loss having endured the Holocaust (genocide of the Jews), those that survived carried some hope of going to Israel. Although many many entire families were completely wiped out in the death camps, a remnant remained. That remnant wanted nothing more that to go home where they could fully live and thrive in the traditions and culture of their people. They wanted to go home to a city they held in their hearts for thousands of years – Jerusalem.”
