I wonder if an interesting thing that is taking place around the world among the rich and famous is just preparatory work for the opening of the sixth seal.

The opening of the seven seals is found in chapter six of the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John’s vision of events that would be occurring in the apocalyptic events leading to the second coming of Christ.

The seals are the first of the three sets of judgments that John saw taking place, the other two being the sounding of the trumpets and the pouring out of the bowls of wrath.

In a recent article for the Daily Mail, Kim Komando and Matthew Phelan report that the world’s rich and famous are and have been building massive underground bunkers on their properties.

This includes an estimated $100 million spent by Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, on a “hidden fortress buried beneath his Hawaiian island ranch, complete with its own energy and food supplies and blast-resistant doors.”

The Daily Mail duo also alleges that the insanely rich are banding together to build underground bunkers where they could flee in the event of a catastrophe.

Peter Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal, and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman have apparently developed a bunker on one of Thiel’s properties in New Zealand.

Komando and Phelan explain that they do not know where this bunker is actually located, but an attempt by the duo to build on one New Zealand property was allegedly turned down by local authorities.

According to Vice, entrepreneurs are even building condo-style underground bunkers in abandoned missile silos that can be purchased in the event of an end-of-the-world scenario.

One of these bunkers located in Kansas goes down 15 stories and is self-sufficient in terms of energy, water, and filtered air. In addition to being well-stocked with food and entertainment, these condos also come with an underground garden.

But it seems that 2,000 years ago, the Apostle John saw this exact thing happening at the opening of the sixth seal that involved several cataclysmic events (Revelation 6:12-17).

This includes among other things a great earthquake.

But what seems to have sparked terror are several stars falling from the skies, which John compared to a fig tree shedding “its winter fruit when shaken by a gale.”

This caused such fear that people “hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.”

So what was John referring to when he saw stars falling from the sky? It could certainly be referring to the Earth being pummeled by a series of asteroids.

But then I ask myself how would a first-century man, whose most advanced weapon of the day was a chariot, describe a nuclear attack? Particularly, one involving ballistic missiles that actually leave the earth’s atmosphere and then reenter in a ball of flame before unleashing multiple nuclear warheads?

He would have no idea what they were. The only word in his limited vocabulary that would even come close to describing such a scenario would be falling stars.

After these stars from heaven hit the earth, John then describes those who fled to these caves, starting off with the “kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful.”

They were then followed by the rest, who also hid among the mountains out of fear.

But the generals immediately caught my attention. These are military leaders and of course, along with politicians, they would be among the first to be forewarned of a nuclear attack.

But then he specifically mentions the rich and powerful fleeing to caves. Of course, we know the rich and the famous are building these underground bunkers around the world today.

Is this what John was seeing?

According to Strong’s Greek Dictionary, the Greek word ‘spēlaion,’ translated caves by the NASV and dens by King James in Rev. 6:15, is derived from “σπέος speos (a grotto);” and can refer to “a cavern; by implication a hiding place or resort: – cave, den.”

Grottos were popular among the Greeks and Romans in John’s day and were often man-made or expanded natural underground shelters.

Again, if John was seeing things taking place thousands of years in the future, what word in his first-century vocabulary could he use to describe people fleeing to elaborate underground bunkers.

From his frame of reference, ‘spēlaion’ was the obvious choice.

So as the world starts its slow spin into the apocalypse, it makes me wonder if the rich and famous are now playing their part in helping fulfill the Apostle John’s end-time prophecy?
