Our family has always had dogs, but I am gaining a new appreciation for cats.

The first story involves an Edmond, North Dakota family, their small pup, a couple of coyotes, and a black stray cat they adopted or perhaps more accurately had adopted them, the New York Post reports.

The Dyer family had just let out their Havanese pup for his nightly duty when they heard a racket in the backyard. They opened the door and saw their bloodied pup race into their home.

Uncertain of what had happened, the Dyers decided to check their surveillance footage as they were taking Oakley, who had several cuts on his body, to the vet.

In the video, they saw a coyote attacking Oakley. Suddenly, Binx, the black cat who lives in their backyard, charged the coyote hissing and snarling, forcing the coyote to drop the pup and flee.

The second video involves a small California boy who was saved from an attack by a neighbor’s dog by the family cat:
