A video has surfaced of a massive rogue wave estimated to be 20 feet (ca. 6 m) high smashing over a seawall in Ventura, California on Thursday morning, Dec 28, 2023, catching 20 people in its wake.

It was one of several rogue waves that pounded California’s coastline on Thursday, leaving at least eight people hospitalized, the New York Post reports.

They also caused massive flooding, resulting in evacuation orders being issued for numerous beach towns. The waves were being caused by storms off California’s coast.

According to a report by the National Weather Service, more rogue waves could be on the way by the weekend and issued a warning for the US’s western coastline from Washington State in the north to US-Mexico in the south. It added that waves could potentially reach forty feet high, the Daily Mail reports.

The appearance of these rogue waves may in fact simply be a sign of things to come.
