There will be a record number of Nativity Scenes put up at state capitols across America again this Christmas, the Christian Post reports.
It will help ensure that people remember the Reason for the Season.
According to a new release issued by the Thomas More Society, two non-profits, with the help of local groups, will be setting up nativity scenes on the grounds of 43 state legislatures this year.
This matches the record total of 43 set up last year.
The Thomas More Society (TMS) is a legal non-profit dedicated to protecting religious freedom across the US.
In its news release, TMS added that it is working with the American Nativity Scene committee to ensure that there are no legal challenges to setting up these Nativity scenes.
In the past, TMS has gone to court to stop previous bans on government property and today, there is relatively little resistance to setting them up. However, hindrances can express themselves in other ways, such as stalling the approval process.
“The law is clear,” said TMS Executive Vice President, Thomas Olp. “Government entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday—or allow citizens to do so on government property, including Nativity scenes, as long as a crèche’s sole purpose is not to promote its religious content, and it is placed in context with other symbols of the season as part of an effort to celebrate the public Christmas holiday through traditional symbols.”
Though the Constitution allows for such religious expression on government property, it has not stopped others from expressing their opposition in different ways.
In 2021, members of The Satanic Temple set up what many allege was an anti-nativity scene at the Illinois legislature. It featured a baby Baphomet (a deity with a goat’s head and human body) wrapped in swaddling clothes in what many allege was an attempt to mock the Christian version.
