Because of recent earthquake activity, there are concerns that a supervolcano near Naples, Italy may be on the verge of erupting, the Daily Mail reports.

There have been several tremors this past week and recently residents were shaken up by a 4.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Monday, Oct.2, 2023. It resulted in damage to homes and debris hitting cars.

Campi Flegrei is the largest supervolcano in Europe and has been showing signs of activity for several months suggesting its magma is building up.

The super volcano’s caldera includes 24 craters and volcanic edifices.

Research conducted in June by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) along with University College London (UCL) concluded that the volcano is in an ‘extremely dangerous state’ and is nearing its ‘breaking point.’

There are also concerns that the earthquakes may be fracturing the volcano’s caldera, making it more vulnerable to an eruption as the pressure builds beneath.

There are approximately 700,000 people living in the region that could be directly impacted by the eruption which could potentially release 200 cubic miles of lava.

The Daily Mail writes that scientists said such an eruption would be the “be “equivalent to that of a 1 km-wide asteroid hitting the Earth.”

The Prophet Joel warned that the coming Day of the Lord would marked by columns of smoke, the iconic symbol of volcanic activity (Joel 2:30). He added that these eruptions in the plural would be accompanied by fire and blood.
