According to the Daily Mail, people in Washington DC and New York City reported seeing a huge fireball streaking across the sky on Sunday evening, September 3, 2023. It reportedly caused panic in the two cities.

The meteor fireball which was traveling at an estimated 36,000 miles per hour (ca. 57,936 km/h) rocketed across the night sky at around 9:30 pm and could be seen as far away as New Jersey.

The greenish meteor with a large orange-colored tail lit up the night sky and people reported hearing a large boom as it exploded at the end of its flight about 22 miles (ca. 35 km) in the sky above Gnatstown, Pennsylvania.

It is estimated that the meteor traveled a distance of 55 miles (ca. 89 km) before disintegrating.

Because of its unusual brightness, this meteor is referred to as a bolide, which is a meteor that explodes in a bright flash at the end of its flight.
