The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the head of his spear weighed[a]six hundred shekels of iron; and his shield-carrier walked in front of him. (1 Samuel 17:7 NASV)

1 Samuel 17:7 provides a description of the massive weaponry that Goliath, the Philistine giant and champion had on him.

The head of his spear was said to weigh 600 shekels. Since the weight of a shekel varied through the generations, it is difficult to know exactly how much that was, but some estimate that the spearhead weighed around 16 pounds, 11 ounces (7.76 kg).

Using that weight as a measure, they were able to construct a spearhead of similar weight that ended up being 26 inches (ca. 66 cm) long and 7.8 inches (ca. 20 cm) wide.

In order to balance the spearhead’s weight properly they needed a shaft that was a minimum 10 feet (ca. 3 m) long.

It was a massive spear.

Recently archaeologists from University College London were stunned when they discovered massive stone axes in Medway Valley located in Southeast England, The Blaze reports.

They were part of an excavation at a Manor house that started in 2021.

A couple of the axe heads were over 12 inches (ca. 30 cm) long with very thick bases and archaeologists are having a difficult time understanding how people of normal size would have used them.

“We’re just not sure if the size of this one meant it had another function or was used in a different way. ‘Giant’ hand axes like the one we found are real outliers, and it’s no accident it was made this size,” said senior archaeologist Letty Ingrey in a press release. “Whoever made it went to a lot of effort, firstly to find a piece of good quality flint big enough to make a tool of this size and then to carefully flake it and shape its long and finely worked tip.”

Archaeologists believe the giant axe heads were constructed 300,000 years ago, but admit they have no evidence to support that time estimate. They are also uncertain about who made them.

Of course, the Bible refers to a unique race of giant men that existed one time on Earth, a race of giants that has since been confirmed by archaeology.
