The Republic of Vietnam has already decided to ban Hollywood’s latest blockbuster, the soon-to-be-released Barbie movie, Fox News reports.
Why you ask?
Well the movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, will apparently feature a map that includes wide swaths of contested waters as being part of Communist China.
These territorial waters which the movie claims are Chinese territory actually belong to other countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan.
In fact, the movie features the same Chinese Communist Party map that The Hague declared to be illegal, Fox News noted.
Which leads to the obvious question why display the map at all?
Just leave it out. I am sure there would be a simple workaround so no map would be needed.
This obvious fact leads some to wonder if the movie producers deliberately added it to appease the Chinese Communist Party.
As Fox News explains:
“The map’s inclusion in “Barbie” underscores the growing controversy over Hollywood’s reliance on China, which has rivaled the U.S. for its biggest market in recent years. Critics of the movie industry have accused studio executives of ignoring Beijing’s human rights abuses for the sake of selling films there.“
