The recent emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to some interesting speculation on the world religion that some believe the Apostle John spoke about in his vision of the end times recorded in the Book of Revelation.

Recently we have seen a church service led entirely by AI via an avatar shown on a large screen in the church. The AI led the prayers, worship and even preached the sermon.

We have also seen examples of AI being used to rewrite the Bible. PETA used AI to rewrite Genesis to fit the organization’s vegetarian beliefs.

Others are warning that AI could even be used to create new bizarre religions.

This leads to speculation that AI could play a role in the rise of a satanic world religion that the Apostle John saw emerging in the end times.

Now to be fair, John does not explicitly say there will be a new world religion in the end times, but certainly, there is evidence of it in his symbolic language.

In Revelation 17:1-18, John speaks of the appearance of a ‘great prostitute’ also referred to as the ‘harlot of Babylon’.

⁵ and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery: “BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” (Revelation 17:5 NASV)

The term ‘harlot’ was often used metaphorically throughout the Old Testament to refer to false religions (Jeremiah 3:6, 9) leading end-times scholars to suggest John used this term to symbolically describe a new world religion rising up in the end times.

If this is the case, it will have several characteristics:

First, it will dominate the religious landscape of the world as it will include “peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues” (Revelation 17:15). This suggests that people of all religious faiths will embrace it. Some have proposed that it may be some type of interfaith religion.

Secondly, it will have a celebrity-type status associated with it, as we are told the kings of the earth will become drunk with its wine (Revelation 17:2). Being part of this new religion will be a cool thing to do. There are hints of some benefits, financial and otherwise, associated with belonging to it.

Thirdly, sexual immorality seems to be a big part of this new religion (Revelation 17:2), which implies it will redefine traditional morality.

Finally, it will result in the persecution of Christians, who have refused to embrace this new world religion (Revelation 17:6). Believers will face martyrdom for rejecting the new religion.

It is difficult to know what the ultimate makeup of this new world religion will be?

Some believe that it might be a reference to an apostate Roman Catholic Church because of the seven mountains on which the prostitute sits (Revelation 17:9). Rome is often associated with the seven hills that according to Wikipedia “form the geographical heart of Rome”.

Others have connected this new-world religion with Islam or perhaps a new-age religion. The internet is full of suggestions and with AI taking on a more prominent role in society there is speculation that it could potentially play a role.
