A Christian man in Pakistan, Noman Masih, has been sentenced to death by hanging for blasphemy after he opened a messaging app on his phone that contained cartoon images of Islam’s prophet Muhammad, the Daily Mail reports.

A second man, Sunny Mushtaq, who also received the same images in 2019 is expected to receive the death penalty as well.

The two were charged under Pakistan’s blasphemy law, 295-c, which calls for the death penalty when a person disrespects the Muslim prophet.

The two men were teenagers when the images were sent to them as part of a game by a Muslim teenage boy. The messaging app automatically downloaded the images onto the defendant’s phones, whether they wanted them or not.

The Muslim boy who sent the photos was not arrested and did not face any charges for his participation in the game. Because of this, the lawyers for the two Christian defendants stated that the case is yet another example of the horrid abuse of blasphemy laws in Pakistan.

When Muslims find themselves in legal disputes with Christians in the country, they will often accuse the Christians of blasphemy as an effective method for winning their case.

There are two major sects within Islam, Shia and Sunnis. Sunnis who make up 85% of the Muslim population around the world believe any depiction of Muhammad is an act of blasphemy. Meanwhile, Shia Muslims, found primarily in Iran, do not and often include images of Islam’s founder as part of their worship.

The Daily Mail added that an eight-year-old Hindu boy in the country is facing a similar death sentence for blasphemy after urinating on a rug inside an Islamic religious school.
