American actor, Kelsey Grammer, who plays Chuck Smith in the Jesus Revolution, a movie about the Jesus People’s movement that swept America in the late 60s and early 70s may have received a sign from God leading him to accept the role, the Western Journal reports.
Kelsey Grammer is best known for playing psychiatrist Frasier Crane in two hit TV series, Cheers and Frasier.
Grammer shared the unusual story that led him to accept the role in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s Tonight Show.
“The truth is I was having sort of a meditative evening one night in my home, and I was up pretty late. It was about 3, 4 in the morning,” Grammer told Fallon.
“And I started to think, ‘I want to do something worthwhile, something that has a bigger purpose than just me.’ And I was kind of saying a prayer, I guess. And the next morning the script lands on my door. And I read it and I said, ‘OK, that’s it. I’m doing this Jesus story.’”
When Jimmy Fallon said, ‘It’s a sign,” Grammer, who is a Christian, responded, “It’s pretty cool.”
The movie itself had a profound impact on the actor, who broke into tears when discussing his role in an interview with “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
Grammer said that when he and his wife, Kayte Walsh, watched an uncut version of the movie, Kayte started crying and said, “Oh my God, it’s the best thing you’ve ever done.”
Grammer added, “I love this movie. I really love it.”
Now some may look at this Kelsey’s story about his prayer the night before the script arrived as just a coincidence, but I believe God works through coincidences because they have a unique way of catching our attention.
The Greek word for coincidence, synkyrian, shows up just once in the New Testament, and oddly it’s found in the story of the Good Samaritan.
Jesus was explaining how a man had been beaten and left for dead, and said by chance (synkyrian), a priest who was walking down the road, saw the man lying on the road and took a wide berth around him.
31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. (Luke 10:31 NKJV)
Of course, coincidentally a Samaritan who was despised by the Jews also happened to walk down that same road and decided to care for the man.
Synkyrian is a compound word composed of ‘sun’ translated ‘together with’ and ‘kurios’ which means ”Supreme authority’ and hints at divine intervention in a situation.
It suggests that God may be at work behind the scenes orchestrating a series of events specifically to catch our attention.
Now I am not saying that God is in every coincidence, but there are times when He clearly is.
In an interview with USA Today about Jesus Revolution, Grammer said that he is not apologetic about his faith.
‘Jesus made a difference in my life. That’s not anything I’ll apologise for. I have found great peace in my faith and in Jesus.’, Grammer added.
Grammer credited his faith in helping him overcome issues with alcohol and drug abuse, but admitted going through a dark period that challenged his faith after his sister was raped and murdered in 1975.
