The growing reality of spiritual warfare

We live in interesting times.

While, Christians witnessed an outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Asbury college in Kentucky, CBN reported on an unusual counter event that will be taking place in Boston at the end of April.

Called ‘SatanCon 2023,’ the event is being hosted by The Satanic Temple (TST) based in Salem, Massachusetts and is billed as “a weekend of blasphemy and remembrance in Boston.”

According to TST’s website, the event has already been sold out and promises to be the largest satanic gathering in history.

This will be the second convention sponsored by TST and this year’s event will mark the group’s tenth anniversary.

The event, which will run from April 28-30, will coincide with an ancient German holiday called Hexennacht or ‘witches night’ a two-day event that typically runs from April 30 to May 1. During this festival, witches across Germany gathered at Mount Brocken to revel with the devil.

Mount Brocken has been associated with the demonic since the Middle Ages and the popularity of the celebration is growing among modern pagans, with similar celebrations being held across Europe to mark the day.

TST’s event will include a ‘Satanic Ball’ on opening night and a satanic marketplace.

There will also be several sessions that people can attend with interesting titles including “Satanic Panic in Brazil,” “Deconstructing Your Religious Upbringing,” and “Sins of the Flesh: Satanism and Self-Pleasure.”

In his letters, the Apostle Paul reiterated several times, that we are involved in a spiritual war. Perhaps his most infamous injunction is found in the Book of Ephesians when he tells believers that we do not war against flesh and blood:

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12 ESV)

Our real enemy is not physical or human, but rather spiritual, the one who Paul describes as the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Though Christians understand the theory of spiritual warfare, we typically give it lip service as we don’t appreciate the reality of this conflict.

This is due in part, that the satanic realm has been hidden in the shadows.

But this was not the case in the Apostle Paul’s day, when he regularly encountered the satanic realm. We read in Acts of Paul’s confrontation with a Satanic magician or sorcerer, Bar-Jesus, who was openly influencing the governor of Cyprus against the gospel. Paul described Bar-Jesus as “son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness,” before blinding him in the name of Jesus (Acts 13:4-12).

And with the satanic realm becoming more open and vocal about its beliefs, the spiritual warfare that we have typically treated as theory may start becoming very real.
