Newsweek reports that n audit conducted by SparkToro alleges nearly half of US President Joe Biden’s followers on Twitter are fake followers
This means that either a real person is not producing the tweets, which include bot, spam, propaganda, and advertising accounts that are run by software or the accounts are no longer active on Twitter.
According to SparkToro, nearly 11 million of Biden’s 22 million followers (49.3%) are not real or no longer active.
Companies purchase advertising based on the number of real people who could potentially see the ad. Previously, Twitter has stated that only 5% of its accounts were fake.
Western Journal adds that Biden was not the only one impacted by this audit, which also alleged 70.2% of Elon Musk’s 93.3 million followers were bogus.
Musk, who had previously announced he was going to buy Twitter, stated he has put his bid on hold pending receiving more information on how many of Twitter’s accounts are real.
As the Western Journal explains:
If a significant amount of Twitter’s user base is fake, that could drastically affect the value of the company. Without an accurate tally of spam accounts, Musk tweeted, “how do advertisers know what they’re getting for their money? This is fundamental to the financial health of Twitter.”
