Did the Chinese Communist Party invent a fake Swiss scientist?

The Daily Mail reports that Facebook has cancelled over 500 accounts allegedly connected with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to spread its fake COVID propaganda and anti-American rhetoric.

This included creating an account for a fake biologist from Switzerland, Wilson Edwards, who stated that the US was using ‘enormous pressure and even intimidation’ to force an investigation into the origins of COVID at the Wuhan lab.

The same day, that account was created, Facebook alleges that within hours other fake accounts, some created the same day as the Swiss Biologist’s account, were spreading the propaganda posted on the biologist’s page.

Facebook noted that this fraud was poorly managed as some accounts simultaneously published the exact same posts.

Within days, major news media outlets in communist China were reporting on the fake Swiss scientist’s allegations.

Daily Mail adds that Facebook traced the fake Swiss biologist, 523 other fake Facebook accounts and 20 pages and four Facebook groups, along with 86 Instagram accounts to a technology company based in Chengdu, China and CCP activists working abroad.

The CCP’s propaganda plot unravelled when people living in Switzerland tried to track down the Swiss biologist and discovered there was no record of him having existed.

In August 2021, the Swiss embassy in Beijing even posted a Tweet, asking for Wilson Edwards to come forward:

“Looking for Wilson Edwards, alleged Swiss biologist, cited in press and social media in China over the last several days. If you exist, we would like to meet you! But it is more likely this is fake news, and we call on the Chinese press and netizens to take down posts.”
