Earlier this year, João Prudêncio Neto, posted a video on Instagram celebrating the miraculous birth of his baby daughter, Giovanna. The video showed both João and his son, David, who was holding the new born, weeping with joy.
According to CBN, João shared that he became sterile shortly after the birth of their son and doctors told Neto and his wife, Karolinne, that they would be unable to have further children without fertility treatments.
But they very much desired another child and prayed daily for a miracle, and described the arrival of Giovanni, as a “miracle that only Jesus could provide,” as Karolinne became pregnant without the couple going through any medical procedures or surgery.
Neto wrote:
“I waited patiently for the Lord; He inclined to me and heard me when I cried for help,” Psalms 40:1. After I had our firstborn son David, I became infertile. It was impossible to be a parent again with zero spermatozoids production. My wife@karolinneprudencio was healthy and also dreamed of having another child. Until the Lord Jesus healed me, giving me life to produce another.”
“Giovanna’s birth is not only a blessing to our family, but also to all those who dream of one day experiencing the miracle that only Jesus can do,” he continued. “We prayed every day for a miracle. I became a dad again without any artificial procedure. Glory be to God! All this emotion is for the miracle done; my wife is very well and happy.”
The video was originally posted on March 4, 2021 and reposted again on October 3 and has received 73,975 likes.
Fertility issues in the Bible
We have a record of several couples in the Bible who struggled with infertility and received a miraculous provision. It is interesting to note, that in almost every instance, the children went on to be used by God.
This included Abraham and his wife Sarah who did not conceive Isaac until Abraham was a 99 years old and Sarah 90 (Genesis 17:1-27). Ironically, they tried the only fertility treatment available at the time and had a Sarah’s handmaid, Hagar, serve as a form of surrogate birthing a son, Ishmael, for Abraham.
It took Isaac & Rebekah 20 years before they had their two twin sons Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25:19-26). Issac married Rebekah when he was 40, and they had the two boys when Isaac was 60.
And then Jacob and his wife Rachel also struggled to conceive. In this instance, God blessed Leah, allowing her to have children, because of how Jacob treated his first wife (Genesis 29:31). This suggests that even Leah was having problems conceiving indicating that Jacob was the problem. But eventually God blessed Rachel, who birthed Joseph:
“Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. She conceived and bore a son and said, “God has taken away my reproach.” And she called his name Joseph, saying “May the Lord add to me another son!” (Genesis 30:22-14 NIV)
Zorah and his wife Manoah also struggled to have children. They were finally able to conceive after an angel appeared telling them that they would have a son, Samson, who would take on the Nazarite vow from birth (Judges 13:1-25).
Elkanah and Hannah were also finding it difficult to have children. In this instance, we know that the problem lay with Hannah, as Elkanah had children with is first wife, Penniah. (1 Samuel 1:1-28). We know from the story, that Hannah was emotionally wrought and prayed continually for a child, before giving birth to the prophet Samuel.
It was an angel of the Lord, who told both Zechariah and Elizabeth that they would have a child, John the Baptist, in their old age (Luke 1:13-21). We are told in verse 7, that Elizabeth was barren.
