There was a mixed reaction when Simone Biles suddenly pulled out of the Olympics, citing mental health issues. Biles has been a star performer on America’s gymnastic team for several years.
Biles departure, announced on Twitter, would clearly impact the American team’s chances and some criticized the move stating she was being selfish and letting her team down, while others applauded Biles for putting her mental well-being ahead of a sport’s competition.
Mega pop star, Justin Bieber, also responded, sending a supportive message to Biles on Instagram stating, that he had done a similar thing when he pulled out of his Purpose tour in 2017, because he needed to focus on his personal well-being.
Justin cited Matthew 16:26, writing:
“Nobody will ever understand the pressures you face! I know we don’t know each other but I’m so proud of the decision to withdraw.”
“It’s as simple as- what does it mean to gain the whole world but forfeit your soul. Sometimes our no’s are more powerful than our yes’s. When what you normally love starts to steal your joy it’s important we take a step back to evaluate why.
“People thought I was crazy for not finishing the purpose tour but it was the best thing I could have done for my mental health!! So proud of you @simonebiles.”
