The number of medical professionals and researchers who have signed the Great Barrington Declaration calling for an end of the lockdowns is skyrocketing. Medical professionals and others can sign the Declaration by clicking here.
The Great Barrington Declaration was started by three leading epidemiologists, Dr. Martin Kulldorf: Harvard University, Dr. Sunetra Gupta: Oxford University and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya: Stanford University, on Oct 4, 2020.
The declaration calls for an end to lockdowns because of the negative mental and physical problems that arise because of the forced isolation. Essentially, they argue the cure is worse than the disease.
Secondly, the Declaration states that lockdowns don’t stop the virus, they only slow its spread and extend the pandemic. Instead of locking down whole countries and states, governments should focus their attention on protecting those most vulnerable to the Coronavirus, while letting the remaining population get the virus.
Essentially, they believe the most effective way to stop this virus is to take the herd immunity approach. Herd immunity is not a strategy, it is a fact of how viruses are controlled. Whether it is by catching the virus or getting vaccinated, the virus will only stop when herd immunity is achieved.
Because of the uncertainty on when an effective vaccine will be available, lockdowns are basically extending the pandemic.
The Great Barrington Declaration reads in part:
As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.
Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.
Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.
Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.
When I first reported on the declaration on Oct. 7, 2020 over 2,600 medical professionals had signed it along with 2,400 medical researchers that included dozens of epidemiologists.
In a matter of a couple of days, the number of signers has more doubled:
- Two days ago, 2,600 medical practitioners had signed the declaration, today the number sits at 11,531. In the time it took to write this post, the number has grown to 11,812.
- Two days ago, 2,400 medical epidemiologists/researchers had signed, today it sits at 5,684. In the time it took to write this post the number increased to 5,839.
- In total over 180,000 people have signed the declaration.
Of course, the herd immunity approach is what essentially happened in Sweden when it decided not to institute a full lockdown and finally some in the mainstream media are taking notice:
Several studies have shown that lockdowns are causing serious social issues:
