If you are a dog owner, the following information might make you unhappy, or maybe happy. Brace yourself.
What are the most intelligent breeds of Dogs? And what are the least intelligent? Apparently sheep dogs from Scotland, Shelties, are some of the brightest, along with Poodles, and those long haired hounds from central Asia, Afghans, are among the dumbest. I don’t own a dog, so I can’t confirm my answers, but I believe that you are not offended by the question.
So what races of humans are the most intelligent? And who are the least intelligent among us? You should be offended by those questions.
I am writing this as a Christian, and I believe that God made us all in His own image and since only humans were created in God’s image, we are all equally intelligent. Questions about racial intelligence never come up among Christians, in my experience.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27) and “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” (verse 31)
But some people believe that races of humans are not equally intelligent. Here’s a hint; they believe ‘we are all evolving at different rates, and in different directions.’ I don’t believe that, but for those who do, racial intelligence, IQ level for breeds of humans, is a rational scientific debate.
One of the greatest scientists among us is James Watson. He won a Nobel prize and he is sometimes described as the person who discovered DNA. He was among the first to identify the double helix structure of DNA, genes, in living cells. As I write this, he is 90 years old, and highly respected. Ok, he was highly respected, but just recently, many of his academic honors were cancelled or withdrawn.
Dr. Watson made a speech in 2007, where he said he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” [because] “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours; where all the testing says not really.” He also said that he hoped everyone was equal, but “people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true.”

The push-back, cancellation of academic honors, happened more than a decade later. Apparently, James Watson was recently in a car accident, and at his advanced age, he is not aware of what is happening to him. He was discredited at a time when he could not talk back, or explain his scientific opinions, and I think that was deliberate. The scientific community avoided some embarrassment by waiting until James Watson was old and infirm.
For many years, James Watson, one of the most respected and honored scientists in the world, has been promoting racist theories, and he wasn’t really censured until he was too old and infirm to defend himself and debate his critics. The scientific community let him get away with his racism for many years.
Imagine if I walked into a Christian church, and told my bothers and sisters with darker skin that I was more intelligent, and they were mentally inferior to me. I would be corrected very quickly, and told to leave. Correction would not come many years later.
James Watson is a secular scientist, and therefore he believes in Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection. From that perspective, we are all part of a universal breeding program, and that means, from his perspective, that some races may be more intelligent, more mentally evolved, than others. For more than a century, we have been taught that cave men were primitive grunting trogdolites or Neanderthals who beat things with clubs. You probably know about the human evolution charts, that start on the left with a hunched-over ape and end on the right with a fully-evolved modern human.
In many of those charts, the ugly hunched beings on the left have dark skin and the upright, intelligent and handsome human on the right has white skin. Look it up. If we follow that logic, we could have human Shelties and Afghans today and James Watson might be correct.
The Bible has a lesson for us.
We are told “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” (1 John 4:1). And one way to test is to see both the beginning and the end. “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come” (Isaiah 46:10). I believe that means an idea that seems logical should be tested to see where it takes us; it should be played out to its logical conclusion. What is the end of that road, with that vehicle?
The Nazis, under Adolph Hitler, started with dramatic rallies with speeches that seemed to make sense, in the chaos of those times. Many good people were impressed and followed. A few years later, at the end of World War 2, we saw dark place where those appealing ideas had brought us. For example, putting Jewish people into cattle cars, and sending them to die in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, was the work of monsters. See the end from the beginning, and you know that Hitler was very wrong. Judge the end, look beyond torchlight parades and inspiring speeches at the beginning, and see the dark place at the end of the road.
We can apply the same judgment to Darwinian Evolution theory. The Nazis used that same evolutionary logic to send “inferior” breeds of humans to their deaths. They wanted to save the world for future generations of more evolved, and superior races. Now we know the end, and we know it is all evil. The same judgment was applied to James Watson, by his peers, and he was discredited. They did not like the end of his logical process.
But if they had taken action when he was younger, he could have told them that they all believed in the same beginning, with him, and they were now rejecting the logical conclusion of their own ideas.
That would have been embarrassing, so they waited until he was unfit to talk back.
There is a logical conclusion for Christians, a good place down our road:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. (Philippians 4: 4 to 8)
All people have the same capacity. But realistically, we are creatures of our environments, culture, geographical location, economic status. And Religion. Having been around the world and seeing other cultures, all this is plain to see. While serving in Vietnam, you couldn’t expect a humble villager to help you repair a jeep or truck. But they could help you change a flat tire. There are people in the Amazon who are still basically hunter gatherers. IQ is your ability to learn. To comprehend. My son is special needs with an IQ of just 42. Yet he functions a lot higher than he should be able to. He is lucky. Some of his friends from school are worse off. So what I’m saying is this. We are not all created equal. There are leaders and followers. Heroes and Cowards. Rich, poor, care deeply, couldn’t care less. Sober and drunks. Follow me? But when we accept Jesus into our lives, now we are created equal. Spliced into the family of Abraham. That is the most wonderful gift God can give us, second being born into this wonderous world with all of it’s gifts and blessings. Watching as we near the return of Jesus it is so sad to see the world choosing up sides. Few comprehend how horrific the tribulation will actually be. Great like has never been before. In those last days we will not be equal.
