There is a total eclipse of the sun taking place tomorrow in the United States. It will touch down in Oregon around 10 am and make a 70-mile wide swash across America ending in South Carolina at around 2:50 PM.

Some of the people living in 12 states will see the total eclipse with every US state witnessing a partial eclipses.

We are living in very troubling times both in the US and around the world and many in America have wondered if this eclipse is a sign from God for the US.

When God created the heaven and earth, we are told the stars in heaven would serve as signs:

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; (Genesis 1:14 NASV)

The Hebrew word translated sign  ‘o-tot’ is used a number of times in the Old Testament as an indicator. It described the mark God put on Cain so no one would seek revenge (Genesis 4:15) and battle banners for the tribes of Israel (Numbers 2:2). It is also used as a reminder of past events that speak of God’s faithfulness in the future (Exodus 3:12).

Signs are also used in the sense of a warning such as the time when God struck down the sons of Korah when they rebelled against Israel’s High Priest Aaron. Their censors were used as plating for the altar as a ‘sign.’

38 As for the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, let them be made into hammered sheets for a plating of the altar, since they did present them before the Lord and they are holy; and they shall be for a sign to the sons of Israel.” (Numbers 16:38 NASV)

And certainly when speaking of the end-times, Jesus warned that there would be signs in the heaven particularly related to the sun, moon and stars:

25 “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, (Luke 21:25 NASV)

And of course many of the prophets spoke of the darkening of the sun as a sign that would take place at the end of the age (Joel 2:10; Amos 8:9; Revelation 6:12).

But as many have pointed out, eclipses of the sun are not an unusual event. Partial eclipses happen on a regular basis. Total eclipses are not so common, but also take place regularly. The last “total eclipse” to completely sweep across the US took place 99 years ago in 1918.

But coincidentally the total eclipse taking place on August 21, 2017 is also happening during troubling times in the US and this may change everything.

In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus tells the story of a man who had been robbed and left for dead along the road.

31 `And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down in that way, and having seen him, he passed over on the opposite side; (Luke 10:31 YLT)

Coincidence in English refers to an incident that seems arranged but is simply the luck of the draw meaning any appeared connection is accidental.

The Greek word ‘synkyrian,’ translated ‘coincidence’ by Young’s Literal Translation and ‘by chance’ in the NASV, gives the appearance that the priest’s arrival at the scene of the crime was simply happenstance, a coincidence.

However it may not be as simple as that.

According to Gotquestions.org, the Greek word ‘synkyrian’ is a compound word combining two Greek words ‘sun’ and ‘kurios’. The first part of this word, ‘sun,’ means to bring together and the second half ‘kurious’ means ‘supreme in authority’ and suggests a divine element in the bringing together.

Coincidences have a funny ability to catch a person’s attention. We note them.

Is it possible there are ‘divine coincidences’ intended to catch our attention?

If so, could a full eclipse of the sun during very troubling times in the US and even the world be a sign or warning?
