The Spirit of Anarchy Is Not from Above but from Below

By Dr. Michael Brown

The Greek word anomia occurs 13 times in the New Testament and it literally means “lawlessness.” As defined in one major Greek dictionary, anomia means “to behave with complete disregard for the laws or regulations of a society — ‘to live lawlessly, lawlessness, lawless living” (Louw-Nida Lexicon). The spirit behind anomia is not from above, but from below.

Mob loots 7-11 store in LA

With woke LA County DA George Gascon, recently celebrating a failed attempt to recall him because of his soft-on-crime approach, a group of an estimated 100 people joined the celebration by looting a 7-11 store in Los Angeles. The Daily Mail provides more details: The gang of people ransacked the store while shouting, completely destroying the COVID-19 safety screen that had been set up to grab as much as they could in Los Angeles, California. A group entered the convenience store near Figueroa Street and El Segundo Boulevard, with surveillance footage showing the looters shouting at each other, on August 15. They can be seen running across the store and grabbing drinks, cigarettes, lottery tickets, bags of chips and other items. According to the Los Angeles Police Department the suspects also started throwing items at them, with around 100 people involved in the chaos. Ironically, an LAPD detective commented, ‘We really want to prevent this from becoming a new trend.’ READ: Shocking moment mob of looters RANSACK and destroy 7-Eleven store in Democrat-led LA, leaving …

Jesus predicted increased lawlessness

When Jesus warned that people’s hearts will grow cold because of increased lawlessness in the end times (Matthew 24:12), I never once thought it would be due to politics. I was wrong. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) is running to be governor of the state of New York. He was campaigning in Perinton, New York on Thursday night (July 21, 2022) when a 43-year-old man, David G. Jakubonis, allegedly jumped on the stage and tried to thrust a sharp weapon at Zeldon’s neck. Fortunately, Jakubonis was immediately tackled and arrested. But here is the lawlessness kicker. According to reports, the accused, who the police charged with second-degree attempted assault, was released the next morning on his own recognizance, The Blaze reports. Some have alleged that the accused may have mental health issues. Politics is producing lawlessness. Guard your heart. Who or what is the restrainer of lawlessness mentioned by the Apostle Paul?

One of the signs that Jesus spoke about indicating that the end times were near is that there would be an increase in lawlessness (Matthew 24:12-13). The Greek word ‘amonia’, translated lawlessness, refers to a complete disregard for the law. It is a time when there is nothing restraining illegal behaviour. It is similar to a period described in the book of Judges, when we are told that people did what was right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25). But the English word ‘increase’ really doesn’t do the Greek word ‘plethyno’ justice, because it means multiply. Derivatives of this word are used to describe floods. So, Jesus was stating that one of the signs of the end times would be a rapidly rising state of lawlessness. In 2 Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul provides a more detailed explanation informing us that the “mystery” source of this push towards lawlessness is satanic: 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at …
