When we read of Israel’s exodus out of Egypt, we see a direct power encounter between God and the powers of Darkness. This took place when two Egyptian magicians tried to counter Moses’ miraculous signs. They failed.

The magicians grudgingly admitted, that Moses’ demonstration of power was “the finger of God” (Exodus 8:19).

In the west, we are not used to these types of direct spiritual confrontations. But maybe we need to prepare ourselves.

Scotty McDowell is the son of apologist Sean McDowell. He was serving as an intern for The Center for Truth in Love, Faithwire reports. It’s an outreach of Talbot’s School of Theology.

As part of this, Scotty was manning a ‘change my mind’ table in New York City. These are used to engage people in cultural and theological discussions.

Scotty was standing when a man named Jason approached wanting to talk about the innerancy of the Bible.

Scotty was shocked when the man admitted he was a “self-proclaimed Satanist.” This was going to be a direct spiritual confrontation.

When Scotty asked if he could explain what the Gospel was, Jason stated that he needed to first “check my map.” He pulled out a bunch of tarot cards and began shuffling through them.

Then he started making some funny sounds and became almost disoriented. Scotty put his hand on his man’s shoulders in order to bring him out of his confusion.

At this moment, I remember just praying for this man’s soul.” Scotty said in a video interview with his father posted on Instagram.

The craziest thing to me was when the man didn’t do anything,” Scotty continued. “But the second I said, ‘Jason, do you know who Jesus is?’ It was like a switch in his brain. Something went off … and I think my biggest takeaway from the entire thing was … [to] say things you know are true about Jesus.”

Jason then swore and said “Peace Scotty” and literally ran away.

Later, Scotty realized that the man may have actually been speaking a demonic tongue. Just as the demonic has a anti-Christ, to contrast the real Christ, they have demonic tongues to counter the godly ones.

Scotty stated that he wasn’t scared by the encounter, adding that he “had the Holy Spirit.”

There’s power in the name of Jesus,” Scotty said. “And I wasn’t scared. Now, watching it back, I was like, ‘Dang, I probably should’ve been scared.’ I put my hands on him. I don’t know what could’ve happened. I could’ve gotten seriously hurt.”

When Jesus delivered a mute man of demon, allowing him to speak, the scribes accused Christ of driving out demons through the power of Beelzebul, a higher level evil spirit (Luke 11:14-15).

Jesus countered that by stating “But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:20).

The finger of God is figurative way of describing the power of God. We see that in Matthew’s description of the same event, when he stated that Jesus drove out demons by the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:28).

The Holy Spirit is the Finger of God.

As believers, we need to understand the authority we have in Christ, and the power available to us through the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

Get ready.

The spiritual battle is becoming real.
