So, baptize a baby … in Gatorade?
I did not make that up. You may have heard of AI for computers, and programs like ChatGPT. AI is a new and sophisticated application for computers, like a computer programming language. AI is so advanced that it can grow itself; it can do the work of a programmer, and make new ideas.
Do you remember the television series Star Trek, where someone would start a sentence with the word “Computer” and then ask a question? Now, something like could happen to us, on our computers. Brace yourself for the impact.
ChatGPT and programs like it are becoming a problem in education. Students are having term paper assignments written for them, by computer programs.
Now professors and teaching assistants are trying to understand which assignments are real and deserve a mark, and which are phony and computer generated. This is a big problem, and a huge change in academic culture.
Who actually learned something, and deserves a degree, and who gave their assignments to their computer?
Now back to the baby and Gatorade.
It had to happen; AI is going religious. If AI can get us a college degree, maybe it can also get us into Heaven. People are trying to program in religious beliefs, to create a computer-driven religious teacher.
For example, one group of Roman Catholics created an AI priest that could do the work of an actual priest. At least they said it could.
Imagine the efficiency and the reduced costs. People were logging into the AI priest and doing their confessions. If I confessed all my sins to a computer, I would wonder who else was listening on the other side. But some people are open to the idea of a software confessional booth.
The AI priest gave other religious advice, as it was programmed to do, and someone asked it about baptizing babies. That is a common event in Roman Catholic churches.
In the question and answer discussion about infant baptism, someone asked if a baby could be baptized in Gatorade, and apparently the answer was ‘Yes.’ The computer programmers had to correct that in the code, and they claim it won’t happen again.
So no, don’t baptize babies in Gatorade. If you want to know more:
Religion and AI is a growing trend, and some people take it seriously. Some people are claiming that there is spiritual power in their computer software. Seriously. This might soon become a common way to practice religion, for many people. Imagine God on your cell phone.
Someone tried a question and answer session, and the religious advice was interesting:
If you want to know more, do an online search with words like “religion” and “AI.” The information about that subject is shocking to me.
Also, it is outdated to mention software, on computers. The computer that almost everyone uses, in most parts of the world, is a cell phone that we carry in our pocket. AI, for most purposes will soon be with us everywhere, at the tap of a button, on a small phone. This could completely change cultures, in the world.
Definitely brace yourself for that impact. The wisdom and direction that we need to live successfully could soon be in our pockets.
I am writing as a Christian, and in history, this is not a completely new idea. For the first Christians, places like the Roman Empire were filled with philosophers and teachers.
The first Christian communities had a problem similar this, as the teachers saw opportunities in Christian groups, and moved in. In the Bible, they were called “false teachers.” There are many warnings about these teachers, in the Bible:
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2: 8)
There are warnings about how these teachers in that day became part of the daily and personal lives of believers:
For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3: 6 and 7)
So, AI Jesus?
It’s just a matter of time. Wait for it.
Some common words in the Bible are ‘guard yourself’. That is advice that we should follow.
