ET phone home!

We all know that sentence and we probably remember the movie with flying saucers, and strange aliens like ET. So, why do scientists never research that story? I know, that’s a dumb question.

The movie about aliens who visit California in flying saucers is only entertainment. It is not science, based on research by academic experts. It is also not religion, or even mythology. No one expects us to believe. We only have to relax and laugh, and enjoy the story.

So, what is the Bible, or any other religious book? What do we do with ancient stories from other cultures? The easiest answer is to call those old stories “myths” and enjoy them.

I was once in Roswell, New Mexico, and I recommend it if you are ever in the area. Whatever happened in Roswell, aliens in a space ship, or maybe just a weather balloon, the town has a tourist industry built around the theme of UFOs and alien visits.

It can be fun. I remember a photo site, with distressed alien mannequins and a crashed flying saucer. For a small price, we could pose with those fake aliens and our friends could take pictures.

Send those pictures to all your friends.

So, believe, respect, or laugh. We have options, and other people choose a different option. Your neighbor might believe in UFOs, or possibly you do.

That’s the movie about ET, but here is a different discovery: Have you heard about the underwater city, in ocean water, near India? Researchers have found what seems to be an ancient city, probably from an ancient civilization, off the coast of Dwarka, located on the Northwestern coast of India.

That is; near the shore, but on the wet side. It is almost like the ancient and possibly mythical city of Atlantis that was described by ancient Greek writers.

Some of the oldest written literature in the world comes from India, that clearly describes a drowned civilization, off shore and under water.

We have the options to read this as scientific evidence, or religious beliefs, or entertaining old stories.

Until recently, no respectable scientist, like an archeologist, believed there was any truth in those old stories. They were related to the religion of Hinduism, and dismissed as superstition and entertainment.

And now, we have ancient ruins, exactly where the ancient writings told us they were. This is a problem for academic science:

There may be some logical explanations, but the most popular is that the ocean levels rose, long ago, and an ancient city was drowned in the rising water. That might make sense, to some of us, but there is a problem. Scientists agree that ocean levels did rise, when the glaciers melted, at the end of the last ice age.

That might explain the drowned city, except science experts believe in human civilization that started more recently. Imagine primitive hunters with spears and arrows, and maybe cave men. That is what scientific experts believe existed at the time when the ocean levels rose, as the glaciers melted.

That drowned city should not exist. It causes contradictions for science experts. That probably explains why academic science has not shown much interest in this discovery.

There is a tendency to believe first, and then to find evidence that supports the belief. Apparently, teams of underwater archeologists have not rushed to the site, to learn more about this new discovery.

Imagine if someone claimed to discover Noah’s Ark, or the Garden of Eden. Science has previously decided what must be found, and other things are not welcome. For example, the opening words of the Bible are: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1: 1)

I am writing as a Christian, and I know that scientists have no interest in things that I believe. Now, even when new evidence is discovered, it is mostly ignored by researchers. Things described in ancient religious texts cannot be taken seriously. A professor in a respected university could be made unemployed, if they promote ideas that are outside of the accepted belief models.

There seem to be other discoveries, that cause problems for scientific beliefs. For example, there may be ancient civilizations that existed in the Amazon rain forests. Some researchers claim that they have found some evidence for this, but academic researchers seem slow to react.

This is an old idea. We have these words, in the Bible:

What can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless hearts were darkened. (Romans 1: 19 to 21)

That underwater city in India might reinforce those words.
