Throughout the Old Testament, there were times when people were endued with special Holy Spirit anointing to perform specific tasks. At times, these seemed outside the domain typically associated with the Spirit’s anointing, such as prophecy and leadership.
This included Bezalel, who worked on the Tabernacle of Moses, and was filled with “the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all craftsmanship;” (Exodus 35:31).
In this instance, he was anointed for a specific task.
Samson was also anointed with amazing strength by the Holy Spirit. We read of his encounter with a lion when, “the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, so that he tore it apart as one tears apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or mother what he had done” (Judges 14:6 NASV).
In Samson’s case, there were times when this anointing lifted, and he would lose this ability (Judges 16:20), revealing that it was clearly sourced in the Holy Spirit.
So in these instances, the Holy Spirit enhanced the ability of certain individuals for a specific purpose and I wonder if a similar thing happened to German shot putter, Yemisi Ogunleye, who won gold at the 2024 Olympics.
Yemisi is a believer and actually sings in a Gospel choir in Germany, and during her press conference after the win, she was invited to sing the gospel song, she had sung to herself after winning gold.
But what makes Yemisi’s story so intriguing is that before the Olympics, she had not won a national shot-putting event in Germany. She had not won gold in any European competitions or gold at the world-shot put events, Premier Christian News reports.
Based on these past performances, she was not on anyone’s card to win a gold at the Olympics, which makes me wonder, in light of the sacrilegious opening ceremonies, if the Holy Spirit specifically anointed Yemisi for these games.
And from Yemisi’ own words, we see hints of what lay ahead for her at the Olympics.
“Some time ago, I was just praying and asking God what he wants to do with the Olympic Games. And He was like, ‘We are going to get gold,’” Yessi said.
Notice how God said, “We are going to get gold.” It suggests a partnership, as the Holy Spirit anointed Yemisi to throw the shot 20 meters on her final throw to win the gold.
