Senior woman holding a Bible

With the help of the ACLJ, a senior living center based in Minnesota has been forced to stop discriminating against a Bible study group.

While senior care centers in other jurisdictions have actually banned Bible studies or prayer groups, in this instance the care center allowed it to continue, but would not allow the group to advertise its event to other seniors.

“… a few months ago, management stated that they could no longer have their group listed on the community calendar, as their group name could be ‘offensive’ to others,” ACLJ explained in its news release. “They were also instructed to remove any notices of their meeting from community bulletin boards. A blackboard that announced the Bible study was also temporarily confiscated.”

Essentially, while other secular groups were allowed to advertise their events, the Bible study group was discriminated against solely because of its religious messaging.

In response, the ACLJ sent a letter notifying the care center that they are not allowed under the Fair Housing Act to discriminate against groups because of their religious beliefs.

The care center quickly responded stating that it would allow the group to advertise their meetings on all forums available to other groups in the care center.

The ACLJ has also successfully stepped in when other senior care centers disallowed Bible studies and prayer meetings while allowing secular ones to continue.
