Buskers singing and playing on street corners are a common sight in major cities around the world, but according to one volunteer police officer it’s apparently illegal for Christians to sing gospel songs on British streets, the Daily Mail reports.
Harmonie London, 20, is a Christian singer and regularly sings gospel songs on London’s Oxford Street and posts videos of her performance to the 320,000+ subscribers on her YouTube channel. Some of her videos have been viewed over four million views.
But recently, an upaid Metropolitan Police special constable said that Harmonie was ‘not allowed to sing church songs outside the church grounds’ without the permission of the church.
When Harmonie challenged the special constable, telling her she was wrong, the constable stuck her tongue out at Harmonie as the officer walked away.
According to the Daily Mail, volunteer special constables, who wear regular police uniforms, have the same authority as regular police. Westminster is a borough of London, and Westminster City Council has included Oxford Street as an area where buskers are allowed to perform.
Harmonie later quoted a part from Britain’s Human Rights Act 1998 which provides freedom of religion in Britain.
