34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34 NIV)

If a new survey is any indication, the average American spends the equivalent of nearly 19 days a year worrying about money, StudyFinds reports.

The survey, conducted by Best Egg in November 2023, focused on those with two months or less of savings in their bank account.

The survey found, in addition to spending nearly three weeks stressing about finances, that:

  • 77% described their concerns about finances as a ‘mental load,’
  • 55% stated that unexpected bills were their biggest concern, and 52% also specifically cited unexpected medical bills;
  • 50% defined financial stability as being able to pay their bills on time, while 47% included just being able to purchase the necessities as defining it for them.
  • 46% found it difficult to balance their financial responsibilities with other life demands, including spending time with friends (41%) and family (40%);
  • 41% stated their money worries affected their sleep; and
  • 25% of Americans spend about a week each month checking their bank accounts and credit card balances and budgeting.
