According to the South Morning China Post (SMCP), a woman eating at a restaurant in China was shocked when she racked up a $60,000 bill for her meal, the Daily Caller reports.
It wasn’t a scam. It apparently was a legitimate order.
What in the world could you order at a restaurant that would come even close to costing that much, you wonder.
Well, according to SMCP, while at the restaurant, the woman took a photo of her meal and shared it on social media.
However, she wasn’t aware that the photo also included the QR code for the table that the restaurant used, so customers could place their orders digitally.
People who saw the photo started using that QR code to make additional orders on behalf of the woman.
This included a range of items, such as:
- 2,850 orders for squid
- 1,850 orders of duck blood, and
- 9,900 shrimp orders.
Even though the woman realized what was going on and quickly deleted the photo, the orders continued pouring in.
By the time they were done, her food order had reached $60,000. Fortunately, the restaurant also realized that something was wrong as it was hit with an overwhelming flood of orders from her table.
However, though a bit humorous, it also exposed another security vulnerability in our internet world.
