According to The Bureau, a report published by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) alleges that agents with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influenced the leadership race of a provincial political party, the Post Millennial reports.
According to the secret document that The Bureau’s Sam Cooper was able to view, an unnamed provincial leadership candidate met with CCP agents in 2022 at a Chinese Consulate in an attempt to gain support.
In his article, Cooper notes that there were only two provincial leadership campaigns in Canada in 2022, the NDP leadership race in British Columbia and the United Conservative Party leadership race in Alberta.
Both provinces also have a Chinese consulate.
However, the two provincial political parties have denied that any candidates met with CCP agents.
Nevertheless, much of the attention for this allegation seems to have fallen on British Columbia. This is because it is home to one of Canada’s largest Chinese populations, and CSIS has stated in the past that the province is a hotbed of CCP political activity.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for BC’s NDP premier, David Eby, released this statement:
“There is absolutely no truth to the assertion that Premier Eby had any meetings with or invited support from the Chinese Consulate, or any of their representatives, during his time as a candidate for the leadership of the BC NDP. The publishing of such an assertion is defamatory.”
The CSIS document also suggested that the CCP targeted the federal Conservative leadership campaign in 2021 and coordinated ‘clandestine’ financial and political support of a mayoral candidate in BC.
This isn’t the first time allegations have surfaced concerning the CCP’s interference in Canadian politics. Previous CSIS revelations also said that CCP agents were actively involved in the election of several, mostly MPs of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, in the lead-up to the 2021 federal election.
