“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NASV)
The Bible tells us that man is made up of three parts, a spirit, soul, and physical body.
The spirit is invisible and separate from our physical body. It is the essence of who we are and contains our emotions and thoughts.
The soul is created when man’s spirit interacts with the physical body. It essentially reveals our spirit’s emotions and thoughts through our physical body.
According to the Bible, when we die, our spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
This has proven very controversial, particularly for evolutionists who do not believe we have a spirit and that life continues after death.
But this was the forefront of a study conducted by Dr. Michael Sabom, a Christian cardiologist.
Over the past 50 years, he has written two books on the subject of near-death experiences being reported by people who had died. Dr. Sabom was also featured in Angel Studios’ most recent documentary entitled ‘After Death‘, which looks at near-death experiences (NDEs).
There are a variety of NDEs including people stating they had talked to religious figures or relatives after they had technically died. However, these types of experiences would be almost impossible to verify.
Instead, Dr. Sabom focussed on those who claimed they had left their body and were hovering above as doctors performed emergency procedures after their patients had died or were close to death.
This type of experience could potentially be verified and if true would suggest that we not only have a separate spirit but that life continues after death.
In an interview with Fox News, Dr. Sabom noted that when he first started his research, he believed that these claims were at best delusions or hallucinations and maybe even outright hoaxes.
However, he has since concluded that these experiences were actually valid because of the vivid descriptions that people provided as they looked down upon their bodies.
Though most only gave general descriptions, six provided such detailed information about what was happening while they were under anesthesia, that Dr. Sabom concluded that they had truly left their body and saw what was taking place.
This included specific details of the high-tech instruments that were used. They also provided details of the different procedures that the doctors and others did. All of this was verified by medical records and people who were in the operating room.
Dr Sabom told Fox News that “these people were telling me details about what was going on, what was going on in the room during the resuscitation, when I knew that they were physically unconscious and near-death during the cardiac arrest.”
“And I left with a big question mark at the end of the book. But I did suggest that something was going on there that could not be explained and needed for further explanation,” he continued.
