Popular Christian speaker, John Piper, recently opened up a can of worms on X, formerly called Twitter, when he asked if people should be drinking coffee while attending a service, Charisma News reports.

Piper basically revealed his stand on the issue, when he cited Hebrews 12:28 while posing the question.

The post seems to have struck a nerve as it has been viewed 2.7 million times.

For the record, my wife and I attend a church where people are encouraged to grab a coffee for the sermon, which is available in the foyer after worship time.

Charisma News cited some of the yea and nay responses to Piper’s question:

Some believe that drinks of any kind have no place in a sanctuary during a service. And that having one reduces the holiness of the moment and cheapens the experience that is supposed to be holy before the Lord. […]

A few even mentioned the first church services were held in people’s homes where they ate and communed with one another, and that did not seem to hinder the spread of the gospel in the early church.
