José Hernández’s story of how he went from a migrant farmer worker to an astronaut is highlighted in the Amazon Prime movie “A Million Miles Away.”
But there is more to the amazing story as Hernández was rejected 11 times by NASA before finally being accepted into its astronaut training program in 2004 leading him to become part of the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009.
In an interview with the Christian Post, Hernández believed God had called him to be an astronaut when he was only ten years old.
“I attribute my success to pure naivete. At 10 years old, in 1972, I remember watching our rabbit-ear TV, and I saw astronaut Gene Cernan walk on the surface of the moon while Walter Cronkite narrated the moonwalk. And I told myself, ‘I want to be an astronaut.’ I felt a clear calling from God.”
Hernández and his wife Adela, whom he credits with helping him persevere through the NASA selection process, now own a 20-acre vineyard near Lodi, California. They produce wine under the Tierra Luna (lit. Earth Moon) Cellars label.
