A massive 6.8 magnitude which hit Morocco on Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, is now closing in on 2,700 deaths. That number is expected to climb as rescuers haven’t reached all the towns and villages impacted by the seismic event.
It is estimated that 300,000 people were directly impacted by the earthquake which was particularly destructive due to the shallow depth of this particular quake.
As we read the Bible, earthquakes which is the Greek word ‘seismos,’ are mentioned 14 times in the New Testament.
Jesus warned that earthquakes, plural, would be one of the birth pangs leading up to His second coming (Luke 21:11).
As we move into the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John’s vision of events taking place in the apocalyptic days leading to Christ’s second coming, we see that earthquakes will play a major judgment role in end times events.
John mentions five separate earthquakes. Note: There has been a suggestion that some of these passages could be referring to the same earthquake. I don’t think they are but, I will leave that up for you to decide:
Revelation 6:12-14:
This great earthquake will take place at the opening of the sixth seal. It will coincide with several other cosmic events including the sun turning dark, a blood moon, and what appears to be several stars, meteors, or asteroids, hitting the Earth.
This great earthquake will be so powerful it will result in mountains and islands shifting. RELATED: Turkey earthquakes may have moved entire country by up to six metres
Revelation 8:5:
An earthquake is mentioned in the announcement of the upcoming sounding of seven trumpets that will forewarn massive judgments and destruction around the world.
In recent years, I have always been puzzled by people reporting trumpet-like sounds in the sky.
While many YouTubers produced fake videos of these events for the sake of clicks, some appear to be genuine.
While there may be natural explanations for these mysterious sounds, I have also wondered if trumpets are being sounded in heaven, is it possible we may hear them on earth as well?
Revelation 11:13:
An earthquake will take place after an angel sounds the sixth trumpet. This will coincide with other events including the deaths of the two end-time prophets.
John says the earthquake will strike ‘the city’ destroying a tenth of it and resulting in the deaths of 7,000 people. Obviously, John has one particular city in mind but doesn’t reveal its name. It appears to be the same city where the two prophets died.
Revelation 11:19:
The sounding of the seventh Trumpet will announce the opening of the Temple of God in Heaven and an earthquake will be associated with this event as well.
It seems to be similar to what we read in Revelation 8:5 where an earthquake was part of the announcement for the coming seven trumpet judgments.
Revelation 16:18:
The Apostle John describes the final earthquake mentioned in chapter 16 as the greatest earthquake the world has ever seen. It will split a city, symbolically called Babylon, into three parts and will result in cities around the epicenter collapsing.
It will also be accompanied by a killer hailstorm.
The most powerful earthquake to hit the world took place in a sparsely populated area of Chile in 1960. It had a magnitude of 9.6 and resulted in the deaths of only 1,655 people in Chile. However, the resulting tsunami killed 61 people in Hawaii and 32 people in the Philippines.
The third-largest earthquake in world history (9.1 magnitude) which hit Tōhoku, Japan in 2011, killed over 15,700 people.
As we can see from the Bible’s end-time literature, earthquakes will play a major role in the last of days.
Some have suggested that with the chaos taking place around the world, we may be entering the end of days or at the very least the period of birth pangs warned by Christ (Matthew 24:8).
