Unelected European Union bureaucrats are demanding that every member state set up a Ministry of Truth in order to censor and control what words and thoughts are allowed on social media, the Daily Mail reports.
Of course, it is not being called the Ministry of Truth which is found in George Orwell’s book, 1984, that the government used to control what people were allowed to think and believe. As Orwell pointed out if the government decided 2+2+5, then that must be believed and accepted as true by its citizens.
Under the EU’s new Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect August 25, member states will be forced to set up a network of ‘trusted flaggers’ and fact-checkers who will have the final say on what is true on the world’s websites.
News websites including 19 social media sites such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram will be forced to comply with the EU’s regulations or face hefty fines.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Cristian Terhes, a Romanian with the EU parliament, had this to say about the EU’s new act:
‘The European Commission has taken a page out of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and demanded that EU member states set up government-sponsored ministries of truth to ensure that wrong thoughts and banned words are not allowed into the digital space.
‘Surely in a democratic society, it’s the public, who hear or have access to all arguments, who are the ones to make up their mind on the truth or attractiveness of certain facts, ideas or parties.
