While gas-powered vehicles still have to pay gas taxes to maintain a country’s road system, electric vehicles (EVs) continue to be exempt from paying these taxes.

However, a new study found that because of their significantly heavier weight due to the batteries, EVs are causing twice as much damage to roads than their gas vehicle equivalent, Breitbart reports.

The study conducted by Britain’s University of Leeds found that EVs cause 2.24 times more damage to roads than petrol-powered vehicles and that could reach 2.32 times for larger EVs. Electric vehicles also cause 1.98 times more damage than diesel.

The study determined that an EVs’ heavier weight causes significantly more stress cracks in the pavement resulting in a faster deterioration of the roads.
