According to recent reports, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was used to lead a church service in early June at St. Paul’s Church in Fürth, Bavaria, Germany.
Using ChatGPT, software that provides speech for AI, the AI platform was represented on a screen by the avatar of a black man who led the service.
AI provided a 40 minute-sermon, prayers, and worship for the service attended by over 300 people.
It is an interesting development as people have been questioning AI’s impact on religion.
We had previously reported on an interview that World Economic Forum advisor Pedro Pinto had with a Portuguese journalist, where Pinto suggested that AI could eventually be used to write a ‘correct’ version of the Bible. By correct, he meant a version that would agree with his personal atheistic opinions.
But there are other concerns.
Christian Post reporter, Billy Hallowell, who has been studying the impact of AI from a Christian perspective, said it would not surprise him if at some point AI will be used to create new bizarre religions.
“AI might actually formulate … a brand new theology itself. And that should be extremely alarming,” Giatti told ‘The Inside Story’ podcast. “The threat is to take these sacred texts and literally replace them with a new kind of truth claim. That is disturbing.”
