I don’t like bad news, and I don’t like spreading it, but here is a problem. When the world locked down to flatten the curve of the Coronavirus spread, other things were ignored. The solution became a problem.
In British Columbia, in Canada, overdoses from drugs rapidly increased, and many people died. Many more people died from drugs than from the virus. Illegal drugs are an old problem, but during the lock down attention went to a virus from China, and other things were ignored. When those dangerous things were ignored, they did not go away.

The most dangerous drug is probably Fentanyl. This is a medication that can be made in a lab, without harvesting plants like cocaine or opium poppies. The labs can be close to us, so there is no need for smuggling routes around the world. We have probably all seen an episode of “Breaking Bad” where the lab was in a motor home.
The problem with problems is that only a few of them are interesting. In the virus pandemic, governments everywhere lectured us about correct lock down procedures, and we all got scolded when we failed to meet the standards. We had to stop that virus. And then we had violent protests in the streets, where all the lock down rules were violated, and the same governments said mostly nothing.
Now we have deaths from drug overdoses, and we get more silence, mostly. More people are dying from drug overdoses than from the corona virus, and the Government of the province of British Columbia has asked for another emergency response. They want a drug overdose lock down. I’m sure they will not get what they want, but they are good people who care.
There are rumors that the COVID 19 virus was created in a lab or at the very least leaked out of one. I don’t know if that is true, but we know for sure that Fentanyl, and other killer drugs, were created by scientists in labs, and then produced by drug dealers in labs. It’s all a product of science; probably those drug dealers know a lot about chemistry. Human progress has brought us to this.
Our gods of science have failed.
After thousands of years of human progress, from sharp sticks to stone tools, and on to civilization, our best experts are designing new ways to kill us. The year 2020 did not give us a brave new world.
When I was in high school, I was very sure that I would go to university and become a scientist. At least I wanted to be a professor, and an archeologist. That career path was more complicated than I thought, and I found other interests, but I really loved the local university, and I was sure that life would be wonderful if I could just get in there. That was a common idea in those days.
About a year after I got in and started to study, my god failed me. I didn’t find the wonderful life that I had planned for. Life was good, but all those educated minds did not lead me to any salvation. Remember, it was our best educated minds that gave us the Coronavirus pandemic, and mismanaged it, and gave us drugs that kill us. These are not natural things that had to happen. Brilliant minds are not always morally good.
I still like the university, but I don’t see the hope of the world there.
Somehow, I found a different God, and this One has not failed me:
“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)
I hope you can know this true thing; all the gods that we trust fail, except for One.
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. (Psalm 139: 1,2,3 )
