Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26 NASV)
In the Old Testament, the prophet Ezekiel peering into the future saw a day when God would give people new spiritual hearts. This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, Acts 2, when God poured out His Holy Spirit on the early church. That move was accompanied by many miraculous healings.
But for Jon Funderburg, this promise of a new heart took on a very literal meaning.
On February 2, 2006, Jon, 32, went to his doctor in Hot Springs, Arkansas complaining of a flu. With his symptoms worsening and an added complaint of stomach pain, the doctor ordered tests.
When these tests revealed a very high white blood count, the doctor phoned and told Jon to go straight to emergency. His wife, Crystal, drove him to the city’s St. Joseph’s hospital. By the time he arrived, Jon was vomiting blood and his condition was rapidly getting worse.
The hospital ordered more tests and suspected that Jon, despite his young age, had suffered a heart attack. Jon had been on medication for high blood pressure for about five years before this. Medical staff called in a cardiologist.
More tests were ordered including an echocardiogram of the heart. The results showed that Jon had not experienced a heart attack and was instead suffering from myocarditis, which occurs when the heart muscles become inflamed. The result was very serious, his damaged heart was functioning between 10% to 20% of capacity — 70% is considered normal and anything below 20% critical.
The doctor told Crystal that Jon could die at any time and expressed concerns her husband might not survive the night.
The church Jon and Crystal attended was now aware of what was happening and prayer warriors took up the cause. Prayer chains active in the church were initiated. They prayed for Jon’s healing.
Over the next few days, Jon continued to deteriorate. With his kidneys compromised because of his heart problems, Jon’s weight ballooned 50 pounds due to fluid accumulation.
The doctors said there was little that could be done.
But everything dramatically changed on February 10th.
In an article on Charisma News, Crystal writes:
Friday, Feb. 10, however, brought something remarkable. It was as if we had punched a reset button and everything was different. Jon’s mind seemed to clear and, to my amazement, he astounded us all by walking to the bathroom—something that was impossible 12 hours earlier.
Jon’s kidneys began functioning properly and in two days, he lost 48 pounds.
The cardiologist stunned by the change ordered a second echocardiogram on Monday. The improvement was so dramatic, the cardiologist said:
“I had to go back and look at the echocardiogram from last week because this doesn’t even look like the same heart!”
Two days later the doctor described Jon’s transformation as “nothing short of a miracle.”
Within two weeks, Jon was back riding his horse.
God had healed Jon. He is not on any heart medication and even the high blood pressure he suffered before his heart problems in 2006 has also completely cleared up.
Crystal has no doubt Jon’s healing was a result of God’s answer to prayer. Even the doctor admitted as much. When the cardiologist told Crystal the positive results of the second echocardiogram she said “Praise God.”
The cardiologists answered: “Well that’s who did it.”
