Jessica Eaves is a mother of four. She is also a Christian and leads an outreach team for First Christian Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
In early October 2013, Jessica was shopping at a Guthrie grocery store when she noticed her wallet had disappeared.
She knew someone had stolen it. Her only suspect was a man who passed her moments earlier.
She maneuvered down the aisles until she caught sight of the individual. The moment she saw him, a scripture came to her mind from the Gospel of Luke.
and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. (Luke 6:29 NASV)
At that moment Jessica knew God didn’t want her to call the police. She approached the man, who was dressed in a hoodie.
“I think you have something of mine, I’m gonna give you a choice. You can either give me my wallet and I’ll forgive you right now and I will even take you to the front and pay for your groceries.” The other option was she would call the police.
The man quickly reached into his hoodie and pullet out Jessica’s wallet and handed it to her. He profusely apologized. By the time he reached the till, as Jessica fulfilled her pledge to pay for his groceries, he was crying.
“I’ll never forget tonight,” the man said. “I am broke, I have kids, I’m embarrassed and I am sorry.”
Though some have criticized Jessica for not calling the police, she understands what it means to be under the gun financially. Her husband just recently took a job where he earns half of his previous job and money is tight.
Jessica knew God wanted her to show mercy and help the man, when his food bill came to $27 and Jessica had exactly $28 in her pocket.
