MANHATTEN: While Sergio Consuegra was on his way to church Sunday morning, September 29, 2013, he saw a stalled black SUV being swarmed by enraged bikers.
Inside was driver Alexian Lien, his wife and baby. The couple were driving in Manhatten on their anniversary when they came upon a large group of motorcyclists. After inadvertently hitting the back tire of one of the bikes — which had slowed down in front of the SUV — Lien’s stopped vehicle was quickly surrounded by angry bikers, some who were off their bikes and approaching the SUV.
Terrified, Lien stepped on the gas to escape and ran over some of the bikes, severely hurting one of the bikers.
Lien and his family were then pursued by the bikers through the streets of Manhatten. The bizarre scene was filmed by one of the bikers using his helmet cam, which you can watch in the video.
The bikers finally forced Lien to stop his vehicle after driving up beside the SUV when it slowed in traffic and slashing its tires.
Once stopped, bikers are seen approaching the SUV. One smashes the window with his helmet. Lien is then dragged from the SUV by other bikers and beaten with helmets. After collapsing to the ground, Lien was then stomped on.
Witnesses say another biker dragged out Lien’s wife — who was holding the couple’s baby — telling her she was next. But was booed down by the gathering crowd.
This was when Sergio arrived. Sergio quickly realized the danger of the situation and despite fearing for his own life, stepped in.
He couldn’t fight the gang himself, so instead put himself between Lien and the bikers.
Holding out his arms, Sergio said, “That’s it guys. Let it go. That’s it. Let it go.”
Incredibly, one of the bikers backed off and Sergio grabbed the moment to huddle over Lien. The rest of the bikers then pulled back. Sergio told the biker still hanging on to Lien’s wife, to let her go, which he did.
In an interview with WABC-TV, Sergio said, “I felt that God was with me there.”
Sergio who is in his 50s then phoned the police. Lien was hospitalized where he received stitches.
City officials described Sergio’s actions as heroic, but he played down this description saying he wished he could have done more.
A number of bikers have since been charged with assault.
Was Sergio’s arrival at the exact moment he needed to be there, a remarkable coincidence or the timing of God?
“There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 NASV
