A study published in Psychology Today concludes widespread porn usage affects men’s ability to have normal sexual relations.
According to Marnia Robinson — author of Porn-Induced Sexual Dysfunction is a Growing Problem — the problem stems from over stimulation of dopamine, which is the neurotransmitter used to activate sexual arousal.
When an individual views porn, he receives a “dopamine spike,” but over-usage dulls an individual’s response to these “spikes” which in turn reduces arousal. This creates a chemical dependence requiring men to seek more extreme forms of porn to induce higher “dopamine spikes.”
Robinson blames easy access to Internet porn for the problem. She says, “It’s all free, easy to access, available within seconds, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Overstimulation of the reward circuitry in the brain is a very real possibility today. Many men don’t realize their brain’s sensitivity is declining towards normal sex because Internet erotica delivers endless dopamine hits.”
Because of this need for higher “spikes,” it has resulted in men struggling to have normal sexual relations with real women. As well, male impotence which is normally reserved for older men is now showing up in men in their 30s and even 20s.
Porn corrupts the soul
In 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul makes an interesting statement about sexual immorality. He says:
Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.
The apostle says, of all the sins, sexual immorality is the only one that is internalized. It is your body that pays the price for this sin.
Paul was echoing concepts presented in Proverbs 6:30-32 that reads:
Men do not despise a thief if he steals
To satisfy himself when he is hungry;
But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold;
He must give all the substance of his house.
The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense;
He who would destroy himself (lit. soul) does it.
The Hebrew word “shahat” translated destroy conveys the idea of corruption. It suggests when we become involved in sexual immorality our soul is corrupted or damaged and no longer works at its full potential. This corruption also applies to pornography as Jesus said any man who lusts after a woman in his heart commits adultery (Mat 5:28).
Breaking sexual addition
According to Robinson, men can break their porn addiction in about 6 to 12 weeks, but added it may require counseling.
The article cites one recovered porn addict who laid down three facts about his struggle: “1. This is 100% fixable; 2. It will likely be one of the most difficult things you’ve ever done; 3. If you ever want a normal sex life again, you kinda don’t have another choice.”
