Addressing Self-Delusion

By Dr James Emery White

Money blogger Carl Richards of the New York Times used to think that helping someone get very clear on their current financial reality was the easy part of financial planning. Once reality was framed, the hard part started: like determining where you want to be in 20 years, and then guessing at such things as the rate of return you will earn and inflation.

Is the Chinese Communist Party trying to subvert Canadian elections?

According to a report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), the Chinese Communist Party was trying to subvert Canada’s democracy which included providing funding to several Liberal and Conservative candidates in the 2019 federal election, Global News reports. More from Global News: Canadian intelligence officials have warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that China has allegedly been targeting Canada with a vast campaign of foreign interference, which includes funding a clandestine network of at least 11 federal candidates running in the 2019 election, according to Global News sources. Delivered to the prime minister and several cabinet members in a series of briefings and memos first presented in January, the allegations included other detailed examples of Beijing’s efforts to further its influence and, in turn, subvert Canada’s democratic process, sources said. Based on recent information from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), those efforts allegedly involve payments through intermediaries to candidates affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), placing agents into the offices of MPs in order to influence policy, seeking to co-opt and corrupt former …

Ukrainians urged to celebrate Christmas on Dec 25

We are living in interesting times, and it may even impact when members of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine celebrate Christmas, Premier Christian News reports. During a church synod held in October, the leaders of Ukraine’s Orthodox Church encouraged its members to celebrate Christmas on December 25 this year, instead of January 7th as it has traditionally done. The group has approximately 7,000 churches in Ukraine. For centuries, Ukraine’s orthodox church was under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church. However, in 2019 it broke free from the Russian Orthodox Church due largely to Russia’s seizure of Crimea in 2014. The differences between the two groups have only grown since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year. In September, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, likened Russia’s invasion to a Holy War and said any Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine would be absolved of their sin. In an interview with Premier Christian News, Christian historian Martyn Whittock explained the decision to move the celebration of Christ’s birth to Dec 25: “Orthodox believers …

Twitter soars

Despite what the naysayers have been warning, it appears that since Elon Musk took over Twitter and pledged to reintroduce ‘free speech’ to the platform things have been booming, Business Insider reports. Reports suggest that Twitter’s daily usage has reached all-time highs and that is after, the Social Media giant recently purged thousands of bot accounts. Business Insider provides more details: Since the take-private deal closed, Twitter’s so-called monetisable daily user (mDAU) growth accelerated to more than 20 per cent, according to an internal document that was shared with Twitter’s sales team to use in conversations with advertisers, The Verge reported. […] According to the FAQ, Twitter added more than 15 million mDAUs, “crossing the quarter billion mark” since the end of the second quarter, when it stopped reporting financials as a public company. If the company is following similar metrics for calculating these numbers like earlier, that would mean there has been no exodus of users, as feared by many. Why forgiveness is like an onion

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Bible Society, Americans who regularly read their Bible are more able to forgive others than those who don’t. In its survey, ABS asked people to respond to this statement: “I am able to sincerely forgive whatever someone else has done to me, regardless of whether they ever ask for forgiveness or not.” The survey found that 94% of those who considered themselves to be scripturally engaged agreed with that statement, compared to only 6% who did not. Scripturally engaged people were defined as those who believe the Bible impacts their daily lives and relationship with God and others. In comparison, only 59% of the people who were not scripturally engaged agreed with that statement. As believers, we understand that we must forgive those who hurt us. This was one of Christ’s major messages, we have to forgive, because we have been forgiven. But I would like to point out one important point about forgiveness. You may need to forgive the same incident more than once. When …

Canada: At $218 a plate, this wasn’t your typical airplane meal

While the world’s elite tell the rest of us to cut our DisneyPlus subscriptions and eat Chef Boyardee to survive inflation, we aren’t expecting them to live by the same rules. On a recent trip to Dubai, Canada’s taxpayer-funded Governor General, Mary Simon and 45 friends who joined her on the trip enjoyed an in-flight meal that cost $218 a plate. Blacklock’s Reporter provides the details: Governor General Mary Simon and travelling companions dined on steak, cake and Chardonnay on a costly junket to Dubai, records show. Staff claimed Simon and 45 friends ate typical airline food. Actual menus for meals that cost $218 per plate featured French crepes, Beef Wellington and Red Velvet Cake with Chantilly cream: “$218 per meal would represent groceries for a whole family.” READ (Behind paywall): Steak, Cake And Chardonnay And when Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau and his entourage attended Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Sept 19, 2022, someone stayed in a hotel room that cost $6,000 a night. So far Trudeau has refused to admit that he was the …

Is a meteor responsible for burning down a California home?

Authorities believe that a fire which destroyed a home in Nevada County, California on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022, may have been started by a meteor, Breitbart reports. The blaze took place during the Taurid meteor shower which occurs annually and peaked this year on Nov 4 and Nov 5 and will peak again on Nov 12 and 13. The meteors which are part of the debris from a small comet named Encke, are of larger size and last longer before burning up in the earth’s atmosphere. Astronomers were predicting that this year’s display would be larger than normal. The San Francisco Chronicle provides more details: The fire was reported at 7:25 p.m. in the Mooney Flat area and was contained by 8:55 p.m., said Fire Captain Clayton Thomas of the Penn Valley Fire District. It occurred the same night the Taurid meteor shower was underway, and many residents reported seeing a bright light shoot across the sky and appear to land in the area near the home immediately before the fire began. The fire destroyed …
