ESPAÑOL: Se Ha Establecido una Sala de Oración Musulmana en el Vaticano
The Catholic Herald reports that the Vatican has set up a Muslim prayer room in the Vatican Apostolic Library.
“Some Muslim scholars have asked us for a room with a carpet for praying and we have given it to them,” said Fr Giacomo Cardinali in an interview with La Repubblica. Cardinali serves as a Vice Prefect at the Vatican.
The Vatican library was set up in 1475. It holds over 80,000 manuscripts and 50,000 books. Additionally, it contains 100,000 items like coins and medallions.
This includes holds old documents of other world religions including several ancient Qurans.
Pope Leo XIV’s decision to allow for the prayer room has been denounced by Catholics around the world.
While most world religions are ambivalent towards Christianity, this is not the case for Islam.
The Quran denies some of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity. This includes the foundational doctrine that Christ is God. It also states that Jesus did not die on the cross for the sins of the world. The Quran writes that another person was crucified instead and that the early disciples were confused into believing it was Jesus who died.
One of Islam’s fundamental declarations of faith often prayed by Muslims is the Shahada, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.”
This will now be prayed in the Vatican.
