There is an interesting verse in the Gospel of John where Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27 ESV). The Greek word “hear” is in the future active meaning its a continuous process. It was not only happening to Christ’s disciples at that time, but will continue to occur in the future.
After the Lord’s death and resurrection, Jesus continues to communicate with His disciples through the Holy Spirit who dwells inside us.
One of the ways that Jesus does this is through impressions and thoughts in our mind.
It was the Holy Spirit speaking to Cameron Cortman’s mother, when he was just a baby, that saved his life. Cameron, 24, now works for the Great American Media that produces faith and family friendly shows.
Cameron was just a year old when he came down with an ear infection as his family were packing for a move to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Because, he had recently experienced several ear infections his mother decided to take Cameron to the family doctor, writes Billy Hallowell in an article for Faithwire.
While driving to the appointment, Jesus spoke to Cameron’s mother, that there was something “seriously wrong” with her son and that he needed “to go to the hospital.”
After checking over Cameron, the doctor prescribed antibiotics. But then his mother shared what she felt the Holy Spirit had warned her about Cameron. The doctor was also a believer. Though he wasn’t convinced, he said that if that God was speaking to her, then that is what they needed to do.
An ambulance was called and Cameron was transported to the hospital.
After a barrage of tests, the family was shocked with the diagnosis. Cameron had leukemia. With nearly 95% of his blood cells infected, there was concerns he wouldn’t last a day.
They immediately started chemotherapy. Since their son was so young, the doctors warned the family that chemo could have a devastating effect on Cameron’s brain. Even if he survived, there was a good chance that Cameron would not be able to speak and even walk.
With friends and family praying, Cameron survived the night. Over the next four years, he went through chemo and other cancer treatments. Not only was the leukemia eradicated, which the doctors described as a miracle in itself, but Cameron suffered no permanent ill effects from the treatment.
The story caught my attention, because I believe the Holy Spirit wants to miraculously heal people. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t always happen. We pray for people and they are not healed. That can be due to a variety of reasons, like our lack of faith.
But even if it is, God doesn’t abandon us. The Holy Spirit still desires to help.
I believe in this instance, Cameron’s mom received a word of knowledge to urgently get her son to the hospital. It was a supernatural revelation. It was a different kind of miracle, but a miracle nevertheless.
This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit given to believers in 1 Corinthians 12:8. Cameron’s mother heard the voice of God and responded. Jesus is speaking to us, probably more than we realize.
We need to take time to listen.
