Born and raised in Detroit, MI, Abdu Murray came from a devout Muslim home and recently in an interview on the I Found Truth YouTube channel he shared his journey on how and why he became a Christian.
Oddly, it was not a dream that was the catalyst for this conversion but rather the words of John the Baptist.
Murray stated that he was a devout Muslim and in his encounters with Christians, he desired to convert them to Islam.
When he asked them why they were Christian, the answer he often got was tradition. They were Christians because their parents went to the Presbyterian church. They were born into Christian families.
During these encounters Murray would challenge their traditional faith by telling them that the Bible can’t be trusted and the Trinity doesn’t make sense.
While he was attending the University of Michigan, two Christian men who were going door to door sharing their faith dropped by Murray’s house.
This led to them coming back several times to share their faith about Jesus. During this process, Murray asked them some tough questions about Christianity with the hopes of converting them to Islam.
While he was out one day, he came across a group of Gideons who were handing out free Bibles. Murray decided to take one home with the hopes of finding some contradictions that he could use to challenge these two Christians, who were slowly becoming his friends.
Instead, Murray found himself confronted by the words of John the Baptist.
During his ministry, many Jews came to John the Baptist to be water baptized, and the thing that caught Murray’s attention was when John told the Jews that their DNA would not save them.
John challenged this notion by saying that they should not claim to be descendants of Abraham, because God could turn stones into the children of Abraham (Luke 3:7-9).
In other words, their religious and ethnic heritage was not enough. Tradition was not going to save them.
This stunned Murray because it was exactly the same thing he had accused Christians of doing.
But at that moment, Murray was also struck by the revelation that he was doing the exact same thing.
“It bothered me. It bothered me a lot,” Murray said because he realized that he was a Muslim because he had been born a Muslim.
Murray decided at this point to objectively look at both Islam and Christianity to see which one was true, and it was this study that led him to embrace Christ and Christianity.
This was essentially Jesus’ message to Nicodemus when the Lord said he needed to be born again (John 3:1-18). It challenged the very heart of Jewish belief because it revealed that Nicodemus’ lineage and DNA were not going to help him see the Kingdom of God.
He needed to be born a second time, through the Spirit of God.
