When we read the Bible we are constantly struck by the number of times God spoke to people.

God told Noah to build an ark.

We are not told how God communicated this message to Noah.

Was it through a dream (Genesis 37:5-7)? Through an angel (Acts 8:26)? Through a vision (Acts 10:9-16)? Through a prophetic word (Acts 13:2)?

These are just some of the ways that God spoke to people in the Bible.

Jesus said that His sheep hear my voice (John 10:27), which tells us two things, that the Lord not only desires to communicate with His disciples, but that we also need to listen.

I believe that God still desires to speak to us today, and wants to communicate with us through the inner urging of the Holy Spirit that resides inside us when we are born again.

In an article for Faithit, Sara Fleming shared the moment that the Holy Spirit spoke to her, as she was standing in line to pay for her groceries.

In front of her was a single dad and his pre-teen daughter and small son.

The clerk had just rung up the total for their grocery bill, $94.10.

But when the man inserted his card to pay, it was declined. So he asked the clerk to remove some items.

The clerk took away some pasta and tuna, and again it was declined. They went through this process a couple more times, but with always the same result, declined.

She saw the embarrassed look on the man’s face.

As Sara watched what was happening, the Holy Spirit spoke telling Sara to pay for his groceries.

“It was like a gentle shove on the back and a mild electric shock to my heart,” Sara said.

She tried to push it aside, thinking she may not have enough money in her account to cover the man’s purchase and her groceries as well. She then thought it might be embarrassing for this single dad if she stepped in and did this.

But the Holy Spirit kept pressuring her to pay for the groceries and each time this impression was stronger than the last.

Finally, unable to take it anymore, she blurted out to the cashier that she would pay for his groceries, telling her to put everything that had been set aside back on the tab.

The cashier asked if she was sure about that.

Sara said yes.

The man started crying.

She paid for his groceries and the man waited until she had paid her grocery bill and gave Sara a hug thanking her for what she had done.

“It’s okay. I wanted to help. I know it’s what God told me to do. And I have been there.” Sara told the man.

As she sat in her car in the store parking lot, she thanked God for giving her the opportunity to be obedient and help this family.

But the story doesn’t end there. A few months later, on February 23, 2020 to be exact, Sara and her husband were at church.

The worship service had just finished.

The pastor was just standing up to preach when Sara noticed that this single man and his two children were sitting at the far end of the same pew that she and her husband were in.

Though there were dozens of churches that this man and his children could have attended that morning, they were at their church and sitting in the same pew.

God wanted her to see. It was God’s way of thanking her for being obedient to the voice of Jesus.
